Why has my dahlia not started flowering?Updated 11 days ago
Dahlias not flowering
Dahlias typically flower from mid summer into autumn, and exactly when they will start to flower depends on many factors including the variety, temperatures, planting time, soil conditions and how much sun they get. Varieties with smaller flowers such tend to start flowering earliest, the large-headed dahlias are typically later and may not begin to flower until September in their first season.
If is it mid-late summer and your dahlias have produced leaves but no flowers, there are two common reasons for this:
1. Dahlias may delay flowering in very hot, dry conditions, even if they are regularly watered. During a hot summers, dahlias may postpone flowering until temperatures begin to cool down in September.
2. Check what you are feeding them. It's not essential to apply feed to dahlias, but if you do decide to do so you should ensure it is a feed which is high in potassium, such as tomato feed, seaweed feed or other all-purpose feed. Feeds which have a high nitrogen content will promote leaf growth instead of flower formation.
