When should you plant dahlias?Updated 14 days ago

Dahlias can be planted between late February and early June. For most reliable results, they should be potted up into 15-20cm pots and grown on until the plant is around 20-30cm tall before transferring into borders. This applies even if there is no risk of frost, as dahlias can struggle to get started when planted directly into garden soil, and also where slugs may easily eat the shoots. Dahlias should not be exposed to frost. If planting before early May, ensure the dahlias are potted and started in bright, frost-free conditions such as a greenhouse. Dahlias potted after early May can be left outside in a sunny, sheltered position to grow on.
