When should dahlias be watered?Updated 19 days ago

Dahlia tubers should be watered straight after they're potted, and again whenever the compost in the pot feels dry below around 3-5cm from the surface, even if the tuber hasn't yet sprouted. If the compost is allowed to dry out for a prolonged period, the dormant tuber can also begin to dry out and become unviable. On the other hand, ensure water can drain freely from the pot and avoid watering too frequently, as dahlias don't like to be in consistently wet or damp conditions.

Once your dahlias have grown on and been transferred into the garden, you should water them only when they need it, e.g. when the soil is dry 10-15cm below the surface. As they increase in size and during high temperatures they will need watering more frequently. Dahlias grown in pots require watering more often than dahlias in borders, this is because soil in pots dries out far quicker than soil in borders.
