When are potted dahlias are ready to plant out?Updated 19 days ago
Dahlias which have been potted and grown on should only be planted out into borders when all risk of frost has passed in your area, which is usually around early May. It is important not to transfer dahlias before they are ready - if the soil falls from the tubers during transfer this will cause root damage which will set them back and could cause failure. We recommend that they are started in 15-20cm pots and they will be ready to plant out and when roots are visible through the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. The plant should come out of the pot with the soil held together by the roots. Allow the compost in the pot to dry out slightly before taking them out - this will cause the root ball to contract slightly, which will help it stay intact and will minimise root damage when planting out.
