Is it better to pot up bare root perennials before planting out?Updated 17 days ago
Bare root perennial should be potted up into individual 15-20cm pots, ideally within 1-2 days of delivery. This gives them a chance to establish stronger roots and top growth in a controlled environment before they are exposed to the challenges of open ground, such as competition from other plants, challenging soil types, encroaching/smothering weeds and pest damage.
Once the plants have developed enough roots that you can see them through the holes of the base of the pot, or there are visible roots when you gently lift the root ball from the pot, it is ready to be planted into the border.
Water well when you plant into the ground and mark them so that you can monitor moisture levels in the soil, keep space clear around the plant protect them from pests.
Once established your hardy perennials can be left in the ground all year round.
