How long do dahlias take to sprout?Updated 19 days ago
Typically it takes between 3-7 weeks for a dahlia tuber to sprout. How long it takes a dahlia to come out for dormancy depends on how early in the season it is planted, planting depth and temperatures. Potting in early spring may mean that the tubers remain dormant for longer, typically they are quicker to sprout when planted later in spring when temperatures are warm and the tuber has naturally reached the correct time to sprout in its growth cycle. Planting tubers directly in borders where the soil is cooler and heavier will usually mean that a dahlia takes longer to sprout, whereas planting into small post with compost will usually speed up the process. Planting too deep can cause delayed growth and can often cause dahlias to fail to sprout at all. Always ensure the tuber is planted so that the top is no more than 1-2cm below the soil surface.
