How to care for dahlias
For best results, plant your dahlia tuber into a small temporary pot between late February and early May and allow it to grow on in bright, frost free conditions for a couple of months until it is around 20-30cm tall. After risk of frost has passed (usually by early May), each potted dahlia can be transferred into the garden in borders or patio containers providing they have established enough growth to withstand some slug damage in borders and also so that the root system holds the soil compost from the pot together during transfer. They’ll need regular watering when in growth, but not too much when first potted while still dormant. Deadhead your dahlias during the flowering season to encourage more blooms. In autumn, lift the tuber out of the soil, dry it and store in a shed, garage or cool greenhouse over winter. They can be planted again the following spring.
