Do dahlias grow back every year?Updated 13 days ago

Dahlias are half-hardy perennials which means they can grow back every year but they do need winter protection. In areas where frosts are likely over winter, or with heavier soil types which can become waterlogged over winter, it’s necessary to lift the tubers during autumn, dry them out and then store them in dry, frost free conditions for winter. When re-planted in spring they will grow back. Read about how to store bulbs.

In areas with mild winters and gardens with free-draining soil, dahlias can often survive outdoors over winter with just a mulch over them, however there is always a risk that they could still freeze and rot if temperatures fall lower than expected.
