Do bare root plants need to be started in a greenhouse?Updated 10 days ago
Most bare root perennials are fully hardy and can be potted up and grown on outdoors in a bright, sheltered part of the garden. Tender and half hardy bare root perennials must be protected from freezing temperatures and grown on in a greenhouse until risk of frost has passed. However even hardy perennials will appreciate some shelter from very cold or very wet conditions in their first year while they are establishing. The shelter of a wall or fence line is often enough, but if you have a cold frame or space to spare in the greenhouse they will certainly benefit from this more protected environment.
