What is best fertiliser for bulbs and bare roots?Updated 8 months ago
Bulbs don’t normally require any feed to produce reliable, healthy growth and blooms. However, they may produce even better results when fed fortnightly while in growth, especially when growing in a pot. You can mix a general slow-release fertiliser or an organic fertiliser such as Blood, Fish and Bone to the surrounding soil or potting compost. Alternatively, you can apply a general purpose liquid feed fortnightly when the bulbs are in growth. There is no need to feed bulbs when they are dormant.
Bulbs and bare roots which produce multiple flowers, such as dahlias, begonias, hardy geraniums and echinacea often produce more blooms and stronger, more vigorous growth when they are fed regularly. A general purple liquid feed such as seaweed extract or tomato feed are recommended. For bulbs like tulips which typically only produce one bloom, regular feeding may improve overall plant health, strength and vigour but this might not make a lot of difference to their flowering capabilities.
