What happens if you plant bulbs too deep?Updated 8 months ago

Bulbs planted too deep may struggle to sprout. They may grow and flower later than expected and may also produce more foliage than flowers as they will have exerted most of their stored energy to reach the surface and will therefore produce foliage at the expense of flowers to replenish the bulb. Sometimes, when planted too deep they can rot in the soil. This is particularly the case in heavier, water-retentive soil types or with summer flowering bulbs, such as dahlias, begonias and callas which should be planted very shallowly.
