Can you plant multiple bulbs together?Updated 8 months ago
You can plant different varieties together to create a combination. This works well providing all varieties enjoy the same growing conditions and aspect. You can layer spring-flowering bulbs in size order (largest bulbs deepest) in a large pot or border for an extended period of interest—you can see an example of this planting method in our video: Bulb Lasagne! How to plant a layered pot of spring bulbs
Summer-flowering bulbs also can be planted together in a large patio container. Dahlias, begonias, cannas and callas work well together as they all enjoy full sun/partial shade, but they typically need more space between them as they can grow into quite large plants. For example, you could plant a dahlia in the middle of a 40cm diameter pot with three begonias or three calla bulbs positioned around the edge. You can of course also create fantastic combinations in borders with summer-flowering bulbs. Instead of layering the bulbs in size order as with spring bulbs, you would plant them with sufficient space between them.
