Can you leave bulbs in pots all year round?Updated 8 months ago

It is necessary to replace the soil in containers for each growing season. When in pots, bulbs grow best in fresh compost which is full of nutrients. If bulbs remain in the same pot with the same compost for the next growing season, they may perform poorly in the second year due to lack of nutrients. This means that you should remove spring-flowering bulbs from pots once they have died back after first growing season (in summer or autumn) and either replace the compost before replanting them, or get new bulbs for the pots and plant the old bulbs out into the garden.

Summer-flowering bulbs can be over wintered in their pots, but you should replace the soil in the pot during winter or early spring while the bulb is dormant so that it has fresh soil to grow in for the next season.
